Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH) regulation was implemented to provide protection to human health and the environment from the use of chemicals and to make suppliers, who place chemicals on the market, responsible for understanding and managing the risks associated with their use. The regulation applies to all substances manufactured or imported in quantities of one tonne or more per year with very few exceptions. If the substance above the regulated quantity is not registered, the substance may not be used, produced, imported or marketed. While REACH was first implemented in the European Union, a number of countries outside the EU have implemented REACH or are in the process of adopting a similar regulatory framework for a more globalised system of chemical registration.
